In ancient China, it was believed that a person has two distinct parts to the soul, the earthly soul that leaves the body at the time of death, referred to as po, and the one that remains, referred to as hun stays with the body when entering into the afterlife and beyond.
The soul that traveled with the body into the afterlife was provided with the necessities he or she enjoyed whilst living, thus ensuring a peaceful transition into the afterlife.
